Happy Birthday, Paul Newman

Paul Newman

Today is Paul Newman’s birthday. He would be 88 years old. We remembered him by looking back at the New York Times obituary that paid such beautiful homage to his life in 2008.

Newman is an icon and exemplar of The Fully Realized Life. Here are a few highlights from Newman’s fully realized life:

The Movies
Newman acted in more than 65 movies over more than 50 years. Cool Hand Luke, Buch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, The Color Of Money, The Road To Perdition. It was an illustrious and long-lived career.

Doing Unto Others
In 1982, on a lark, Newman decided to sell a salad dressing he’d created and bottled as a gift for friends at Christmas, and with that, Newman’s Own was born. The brand, which now boasts a full line of products, donates all its profits to charity.

A Lifelong Love
In an industry where relationships have a notoriously short shelf-life, Newman’s 50 year marriage to Joanne Woodward stands out. As he said in an interview with Playboy, “I have steak at home; why go out for hamburger?” — as if his baby blues weren’t enough to melt our hearts.
