Summer isn’t officially over until the Fall Equinox on September 21st, but with Labor Day behind us, the chill (or not so chill) days of summer are definitely over. And so, we’re saying goodbye to White Hot Summer, and hello to White Hot Fall! With a little finesse you can wear your summer whites well into fall — and, if you’re really clever, you can rock your whites all winter long.
White is one of my favorites for transitional dressing, allowing me, as it does, to hang on to the not so lazy days of summer a little longer, and to slowly, at my own pace, welcome fall. Paired with a pair of black booties, even a frothy summer dress like one of the ones above can make the cut when paired with a fall-worthy topper. Think light weight wool duster or trench in an unexpected fabric or print or with decorative details, like leather around the collar and cuffs. If the weather’s cool, add a pair of black tights. The monocromatic tight and boot combo will ground the look in the transitional season you’re walking through.
You can rock a summer white shirt dress like the one below with a pair of pencil thin trousers or skinny jeans and a bootie or boot.
Or turn an elegant, drapey dress fall perfect with the simple addition of a pair of knee-high boots. Add a cardigan, leather moto jacket or light-weight coat to keep the chills at bay.
Of course, long-sleeves can season proof even the most summery look right for fall, whether you’re talking a frothy evening dress, a crisp day to evening blazer, or an embellished coat that would look perfect with a simple, long-sleeved dress with a high neckline worn with a pale beige boot and a leather belt.
Rock a blouse like the one below with a pair of high-waist trousers in a fall fabric in ivory or black or an exuberant, fall-ready print.
Toss on a white coat with pencil leg, skinny or boyfriend jeans and a beige cashmere sweater.
Rock the heavenly look below as-is if you’re in a summery clime, or swap the pumps for a high-heeled beige bootie and trade the whimsical clutch for a leather number, which will add just a little more fall gravitas.
And just experiment. A white blouse like this one is fall-worthy with just about anything, though I’d pair it with a black leather sweat pant and heels.
This dress just needs a pair of black knee-high, pointy toe boots — with or without a matched to your boot tight.
And this? Well she looks perfect just as she is, ready for any season you care to throw her way.
